This page is for the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus). This is a fairly common species that I have had around me most of my life. I lived for a while in an area were they were not too common and I didn’t realize how much I missed them until I moved to an area where they were common again and I first heard their call from a marshy area at a local park. It brought back many memories. As much as I like them, they can become a bit of a pest if they (and their hundreds of friends) decide to descend on your birdfeeder. They will drive a way all the other birds. When they take over, we give them a bit to get a bite to eat, and then we either let the dogs out do do their business, which scares away the flock, or we bring in the feeders. Once gone, we put the feeders back out and our varied local birds come back. The April 14, 2021 photo is my first photographic evidence of this bird. The best photograph I have taken of the Red-winged Blackbird to date (above) was taken March 25, 2021 at the Goose Island State Park, Rockport, TX.
