This page is for the Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus). I was surprised to see this guy run off into the underbrush. It seems that the mongoose is an invasive species in Hawaii, introduced in 1883 by the sugar industry to control rats in the sugarcane fields. Even with rodents as a primary food source, there have been impacts on birds and other animals. We ended up seeing them in multiple places across the island of Oahu.
