This page is for the Chihuahuan Raven (Corvus cryptoleucus). Being a nearly solid black bird, it is difficult to get a decent photograph. I was very happy when one posed for me while perched on a railing. The light, distance, and camera settings were perfect for the shot. The first time I saw one of these I thought that this bird was an American Crow as it flew overhead while hiking on top of Black Mesa. Upon closer inspection the bill just didn’t look right. So, with the help of Merlin, I found out it was a Chihuahuan Raven. Subsequent sightings taught me that its call is quite distinctive and is the easiest way to tell them apart as they are flying. This first one was quiet at it flew over.
