This page is for the Sooty Grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus). My first photographic evidence occurred on June 8, 2010 as we were hiking near the upper lodge on Mt. Rainier. We kept hearing this booming noise, and I figured it was a bird. Eventually, I was able to get a few pictures of a female Sooty Grouse. However, I was very excited to capture this picture of a male Sooty Grouse exposing it yellow throat patches at part of a courtship display. He was very impressive and I hope he won over the female.
The above photograph is currently the only representative example of a Sooty Grouse that I have taken.
