Orthoptera are invertebrates that include the grasshoppers, crickets, locusts, and katydids, with an estimated 20,000 living species. The Order Othoptera evolved about 300 million years ago, based on current evidence. Characteristics of mantodeans generally include incomplete metamorphosis, the ability to produce a sound by rubbing their wings and legs, hindlegs structured for jumping, chewing mouthparts, and compound eyes.
